Restaurant reviews: Taro Japanese Restaurant, London, UK

Although it describes itself as a “restaurant”, Taro is really a typical Japanese canteen-type cafe which serves a variety of Japanese dishes including sushi, sashimi, soba, noodles and other simple dishes.

It is open from lunchtime all the way through until late in the evening and is pleasantly busy all day. However you shouldn’t find it too hard to get a table and reservations are not necessary.

Now, there are several Japanese restaurants in this area so why choose Taro? For me the only reason is value, but this is not to criticize any other aspects of the Taro experience. The service is acceptable – nothing special but friendly and polite which is as much as one can hope for when it’s such a busy place and they work with a minimum of staff, the surroundings are pleasant enough but not especially different or comfortable so the attraction has to lie with the great food at good prices.

Being sushi lovers we both went for a sushi selection – mine came in a wooden dish – fairly deep – which had a good layer of sushi rice on the bottom and then the fish and prawns beautifully arranged on the top. This came in the form of prawns, squid, salmon, tuna, salmon roe and octopus – all of it was fantastic. My partner chose a more conventional selection, which came on the typical wooden board though it contained similar ingredients to mine and was individual sushi items. His too was excellent. Taro really do provide a visual treat and the bright colors of the fish and roe tempt me every time.

Our table was close to the counter so we were able to watch the sushi chefs at work, which was very entertaining – it’s also good to know that your food is freshly made to order.

We had bottles of Asahi (Japanese) with our food, but a full range of drinks is available. Other diners were eating the noodles, which came in huge portions and looked delicious – a quick eavesdrop on our neighbors proved this to be so.

The interior is clean if a little basic, but in keeping for an establishment of this kind. Wooden chairs and tables and not much else – a few pictures on the walls and the obligatory Asahi cats used for advertising. If you get a window seat you can watch the world go by as you eat and, you never know in this part of the capital, you may even spot a celebrity or two.

At about 9.00 each for a good selection of sushi we thought this was very good value – much more so than chain restaurants such as Yo Sushi where individual sushi items cost between 32.50 and 4.50.

While not the best sushi restaurant in London it scores points for value and quality

Hotel reviews: Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Bristol, England

The Ramada Jarvis hotel is in the centre of Bristol, the major city of the South West of England. It is within walking distance of Temple Meads Station, the main railway sttion in town. If you know Bristol then you will know that this location then might mean convenience but it’s not gorgeous – a lot of Bristol was bombed in the war and rebuilt in the 50s and 60s and it shows! The hotel itself is newer than that though, but when you arrive it does look a bit tired and in need of a facelift.

Parking is available and not difficult, though like most city centre budget hotels you have to pay extra for it, but I thought the GBP3.50 a night quite a good rate. It seemed a secure car park.

I checked in swiftly and the receptionist was helpful and friendly. I paid GBP104 ($200) a night for two people for an executive double (i.e. one grade up from the standard one) booked over the internet before we went. The hotel has a lot of floors (we were on the fifth) but there is a perfectly good lift. There would have been plenty of room for a cot if you’d wanted one – and they provide. I’d have been happy to have my children there.

The room was a good size, had a king size double bed, sofa and a chairs, desk, ironing board, hairdryer, and complementary water and tea and coffee. Everything was very clean, comfortable and the bathroom was great, with a powerful shower over the bath and bidet as well as sink and toilet. The room came with a plasma widescreen tv with pay-per-view films and a decent range of channels, plus an internet keyboard which cost extra to use but you could then play games on the TV if you wanted. It was a flat rate per day – something around GBP20 from memory. Wi-fi was mercifully free and in the room as well as in the meeting rooms downstairs.

The hotel has a nicely decorated Arts bar and restaurant but the prices were a bit much. There is a 17th century kiln in the middle of the restaurant . Good service and a nice breakfast but for dinner you are in the centre so go out – better than spending GBP15 on a main course, GBP6 on a starter and GBP5 on a pud. It cost GBP4.40 for a 175ml glass of Pinot grigio white wine. That’s nearly $9 at the current exchange rate. Ouch!

The small swimming pool and leisure club, with sauna and steam, as well as gym machines had friendly staff but it was all a bit sad and dated. they are closing them for a month in March/April 2008 though so that is presumably to refurbish so things could well be improving there.

The whole hotel is modern, clean once you are inside and really well situated for exploring Bristol.

Summary: A perfectly clean, comfortable, good hotel from which to explore Bristol or if staying on business.

The most overrated tourist attractions in Paris, France – Part 1

To be perfectly honest, I was not overly impressed with any of the sites I visited in Paris. The city itself is quite beautiful, but I was under whelmed by almost every place I visited. The Moulin Rouge was too expensive, and Notre Dame was beautiful on the outside but felt very touristy. The Louvre was so massive and intimidating that I spent less than an hour out of frustration. I had more fun in the mall beneath it than I did in the museum itself.

Of the sites I visited, I would have to put The Arc De Triumph as the site that had the least amount to offer and much less than I expected. From the outside, it’s very grand and elaborate and the view from the top is magnificent, but on the inside, the arc, at least in my not so humble opinion, was rather boring. Other than a small museum at the top and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, there was nothing to see that I can remember. I suppose I was expecting more, so I was disappointed. Had I known what to expect going in, I might have felt differently.

Although I didn’t love Paris, I will admit there were a few sites that were fantastic, although only one of them was actually “in” Paris. Sacre Coeur is a beautiful church located in Montmartre. Its architecture and structure are truly an amazing site. We also spent a day touring the beautiful castles of the Loure Valley as well as visited Versailles, Napoleon’s magnificent home. Even the rain did not take away form its beauty.

I have visited several European cities, and although Paris did have its share of charm, I was more impressed with London and Amsterdam and would return to both first before I would return to Paris.
