The most overrated tourist attractions in Paris, France

Ahh Paris. Filled with museums, cathedrals, towers and so on. Also populated by a few crazy drivers and dogs who don’t get cleaned up after.
Several years ago, my wife and I spent several days in romantic Paris, making sure we smooched a few times next to the Seine. Why? Because it was Paris. However, I found myself thoroughly underwhelmed by one of the popular tourist attractions there in Paris. In fact, it is located right next to the Seine. It is the Notre Dame de Paris, often just called Notre Dame.
Yes, the cathedral is a fine example of Gothic architecture with its soaring towers and intricate crenellations. Furthermore, it is important that it has an amazing organ that is over 250 years old.
But, it just didn’t do for me what I thought it would. Why? I blame it on Disney and other movie companies. In all the movies, which are the only way many people ever see Notre Dame, the cathedral is depicted as larger than life. The flying buttresses are shown as being enormous and easily seen, practically majestic. Furthermore, the gargoyles are shown as prominent and as significant parts of the cathedral.
Nothing could be further from the truth! The flying buttresses are around the back of the cathedral. You can only see them through an immense wrought-iron fence or by going through the cathedral to the back. But the cathedral is often closed for repair work! What is more, the gargoyles are there, but have to be searched out. You have to peer up for long minutes before spotting them. The ones I saw were on the side that was not bordering the Seine. They were cool… and very small.
Finally, the cathedral is not really all that big. If you have seen St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, or even other cathedrals in Paris, you will see what I mean. Inside, it is only about 110 feet tall. And you can tell this from outside. It really doesn’t majestically dwarf everything around it, and it is not at the center or even the end of a broad square or plaza.
So while Notre Dame (Our Lady) is a nice cathedral, the movies ruined it for me. Don’t let this happen to you as well!

Looking for the top five tourist attractions in the United States? You needn’t look much further than the National Park Service (NPS). Four of these five are maintained by the NPS, and the fifth is a legendary natural wonder. Whether you’re interested in architecture, history, or unspoiled nature, this list has something for you.
1. The National Mall and Memorial Parks, Washington, DC

Stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument (and enclosed by a host of fabulous, free museums), the National Mall is the perfect place to stroll while reflecting on the nation’s history. If your time is limited, you’ll probably view the canyon from one of the overlooks along the South Rim (the 1000-foot higher North Rim closes from October to May every year). If you’re adventurous and you have the time, you can backpack, ride a mule, or take a river trip through the inner canyon.

Security is tight these days, but with advance planning you can visit certain areas of the monument. The Ellis Island immigration museum, part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, is a fascinating piece of U.S. history, especially for those descended from one of the millions of immigrants who began their new lives here.

Formerly a strategic military post, the falls have evolved into a year-round tourist attraction. The U. S. is a Mecca for tourists and home to some of the world’s most popular attractions. Whether seeking fun in the sun, or marveling at geological wonders, U.S. tourist destinations can satisfy virtually any vacation.
But, choosing the top five tourist attractions in the USA is not easy, especially for those with diverse interests. So, I’ll make it easier by listing them by category. Either of these attractions alone would make a wonderful vacation, but combining a few would make your make your vacation much more enjoyable.
Entertainment: Walt Disney World, Orlando, FL
Disney is the most popular brand in theme park vacations, and Walt Disney World is my personal pick as the most fun place in the world! The resort is huge, and offers fun and excitement for kids of any age.
Covering 40 square miles, every inch is covered with something to do. There are four theme parks, three water parks, eight golf courses, and countless restaurants, attractions and overnight accommodations.
Attractions include Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and my favorite, Epcot. Epcot is divided into Future World and World Showcase. I love Future World because it is filled with dazzling “Oh Wow” technological innovations, as well as rides and futuristic attractions.
Disney World provides anything you could possibly want in one place, but it’ll take more than one day to see it all.
History: National Mall and Memorial Parks, Washington, D.C.
Washington is filled with historical landmarks, but to gain a greater perspective of those who established and fought for the demographic principles U.S. citizens enjoy, there is no better place to visit than the National Mall and Memorial Parks.
The National Mall and Memorial Parks includes The Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Roosevelt Memorial, World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is also designated as the future home of the Martin Luther King National Memorial.
Educational: Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.
If you enjoy history, you’ll love the Smithsonian.
The Smithsonian is a collection of 19 museums, 9 research centers, and the National Zoo. It houses the greatest collection of cultural and historical artifacts in the U.S., and is an educational experience unlike any other. Artifacts range from presidential papers, to Judy Garland’s ruby slippers. The Smithsonian also houses such geological treasures as the Hope Diamond.
Geological: Niagara Falls, NY/Canada
One of the world’s natural wonders, Niagara Falls is a combination of geological beauty and awesome hydraulic power. It is the world’s “honeymoon capital”, and the area is saturated with restaurants, casino’s and spectacular views. My favorite attraction is “The Cave of the Winds”, where you can walk out on a deck just feet from the bottom of the falls.
Cultural: French Quarter, New Orleans, LA
New Orleans is best known for Mardi Gras, but there is always a festival or event going on there. The city is filled with a history which combines French, Spanish, African, and American cultures, making it the most culturally diverse city in the country. The French Quarter, once a part of the city’s red light district, is still a melting pot of fun and debauchery.
