How to save money while visiting London – Part 4

London is a must see for every travel enthusiast out there, but if you don’t watch yourself a vacation to London could very easily break your bank. So how can you visit the home of Big Ben without spending hundreds of Ben Franklins? Well, to save money you need to first take into account what you spend the most money on. For vacationers in London, the most money is usually spent on accommodation, food, and attractions.
Accommodation:
London offers a plethora of places to stay. Some are better than others, but with that also comes a higher cost. Hotels in London are expensive, and not just the five star ones. Any hotel near the tourist attractions will easily cost over 150 American dollars a night. The plus side of staying in one of the expensive hotels is that you can probably walk to wherever you want to go, but it would still be cheaper to stay in a hotel outside of London and take the tube or bus (perhaps a double decker) to your destination. Hotels outside the heart of London are much cheaper, and they usually also include a continental breakfast.
However hotels are not the only place to stay in London. Young tourists often stay at hostels. Although they lack privacy, they are much cheaper than staying in a hotel. But hostels are not for everybody, and I, myself, could never bring myself to stay in one.
An alternative to both hotels and hostels is living in another person’s house. Home exchange programs are gaining popularity. In a home exchange, you trade homes with a person who wants to visit your hometown and lives where you would like to travel. This also offers a full kitchen, so you could cook your own meals and save tons of money on food. It also allows you to feel more like a Londoner than a tourist as you completely immerse yourself in their culture. The only downfall I could see with a home exchange is that you won’t have easy access to tour guides and help with tourist attractions or any questions about London.
If you are not comfortable living in another person’s house, or having a stranger live in your house, check out the bed and breakfasts that London offers. This way you’ll still get immersed in London culture, and you’ll also have a Londoner there to answer questions for you. An added bonus with the bed and breakfasts is that you will also have some meals covered a day. Perhaps you could also discuss arrangements with the family to cook other meals and save money as well.

You can spend a lot of money having a great trip or you can do a little forward planning, have a wonderful time and save a pot of money!
Accommodation is likely to form the most expensive part of your stay in the capital city. It is essential to book ahead to avoid paying top prices when arriving at your hotel. Plenty of nasty shocks have occurred when holidaymakers have arrived in a hotel lobby, asked for a room that wouldn’t cost the earth and been quoted a price that had them frantically searching for a card with a credit limit that Paris Hilton couldn’t exhaust.
Visit www.hoteldirect.co.uk for hotels that will fit most budgets. Prices are quoted per room instead of a figure for each person. There is a useful search facility for you to be able to find the facilities that are suited to you and your family. Book online to take advantage of the savings that are on offer. Once your room is secured, it’s time to move on to plan the rest of your vacation.
London is famous for a wide range of tourist attractions. Paying individually to gain entrance to the various museums, places of historic interest, river trips, sporting attractions, zoos, palaces, cinemas and theatres will put a strain on most pockets. www.londontown.com offers competitive prices on some of the best places to visit. It is worth examining their London Sightseeing Pass. There are 6, 3, 2 and 1 day tickets available and each will provide a substantial discount on entrance fees for the numerous attractions available.
Eating out is an activity often undertaken without prior research into the deals that are available. www.toptable.co.uk offers discounts of up to 50% on high quality London eateries. The website comes complete with consumer reviews and an online booking facility enabling the user to book a different dining experience for every breakfast, lunch and dinner of their stay.
There are a variety of options for getting around in London. For folks wishing to travel by car, a variety of vehicles and deals are available via www.carhire3000.com. Take time to compare this site with others available on the web to ensure you find the car and price that best suits you.
Public transport is a popular way of making your destination without the worry of traffic jams or risking the attention of traffic wardens who take great delight at passing on large penalty fines to drivers who have parked their cars in the many illegal spots in the capital city. www.tfl.gov.uk provides information on all forms of public transport in London and offers an online ticket sale facility.
Make the most of all that London has to offer without paying the high prices that can go with it. Taking time to research the offers available can make a great trip even better by finding great deals that offer wonderful savings.
Enjoy your stay.
