The city of London hosts a variety of activities and sights to keep the curious and the adventurous occupied throughout their stay. Whether you’re taken with the life and times of royalty or simply want to enjoy the famous nightlife, there’s something here for you.

One of the items on any tourist’s itinerary is often the Tower of London. The ancient fortress stands on the banks of the River Thames and has served as everything from a royal palace to a prison to an arsenal and even as a jewel house. It has also been used as a royal mint, royal armory, royal zoo, and royal observatory. Here, visitors can view the Crown Jewels featuring some of the world’s largest diamonds. The Tower of London has a macabre history, but only seven people are said to have died here.

Buckingham Palace is home to the royal family whenever they visit London. Some of the state rooms are open to the public, giving you a glimpse of the lifestyle and environs. If you see the Union Jack flying, it’s a sign that the Queen is currently in residence. The Changing of the Guard is a great tourist attraction that begins at 11.30 am.

For the more politically inclined, take a look at the Palace of Westminster, which is home to the Houses of Parliament. Perhaps a more recognizable feature of the palace is the huge clock tower that holds the Big Ben bell, which chimes every fifteen minutes.

Tower Bridge is another famous London landmark. Completed in 1894, it has high-level access walkways that the public can use to catch spectacular photo opportunities of London city and the River Thames. The walkways are wide enough to accommodate events. It is an inspiring sight to watch the Tower Bridge open up to allow tall vessels to pass onward to the Port of London.

Trafalgar Square at the heart of London hosts two large fountains and Nelson’s Column—a commemoration to Admiral Nelson’s victory over Napoleon near Cape Trafalgar. The body of Admiral Nelson now rests directly beneath the centre of the dome in St. Paul’s Cathedral, which was built by Sir Christopher Wren. The dome is second in size to the great dome of St. Peter’s in Rome. Many historical events took place at the Cathedral including, more recently, the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Think a real crypt; there are ... ]]> I have been to London above 16 times in the last 20 years and have eaten at quite a few interesting restaurants. These are not necessarily my bargain choices, these are just our old favorites that we try to visit on every trip.

St Martin in the Field Church

Trafalgar Square

One of my favorite restaurants in London is the Cafe in the Crypt at St. Martin in the Field Church. Think a real crypt; there are graves under your feet. Nell Gwynne the famous mistress of Charles II is in one of those graves, though they don’t know which one. The church is not the one that was there when she was buried. The current church dates from the early 18th century, the crypt is much older. In this atmospheric locale you can dine on typical English food, delicious soups, sandwiches on thick cut bread, a couple of hot choices and then the quintessential English dessert, a pudding. You can have your pudding with cream or custard. Add to that a pot of tea and you will leave here very satisfied indeed. If you have a few extra minutes you may want to stop by the Brass Rubbing Center which is also located in the crypt.

Geales

2 Farmer St

When we are in London this is a restaurant that we always visit. They have the best fish and chips we have ever had anywhere. Located in Notting Hill this restaurant has been serving the freshest seafood available since 1939. We have been coming here since 1989. They recently had a change of ownership and have become more upscale but the food, ah the food, it is still worth coming out of the way for.

The Original Hard Rock Cafe

50 Old Park Lane

What kind of Hard Rock junkie would I be if I didn’t suggest a stop at the original HRC. The menu is the usual one but there is a lot of history to this location. I usually wait a few days into my trip to stop here, just about the time I am ready for a glass of real ice tea and an order of killer wings. No gourmet food, lots of music and noise. Come planning to have a great time. Look for the best of their memorabilia, Ringo Starr’s pre-Beatles drum, Eric Clapton’s and Pete Townsend’s guitars and Janis Joplin’s shawl. More than twenty five years and still going strong, don’t forget to grab a tee-shirt.

Porters Restaurant

17 Henrietta St

How often do you get to eat at a restaurant owned by a member of the Peerage? This is just such a place being owned by the Earl of Bradford. You will come here to taste real old fashioned English food, done well. I love the parsnip and apple soup and the pies, oh my, they are delicious. I favor the lamb and apricot but I have a hard time passing on the steak, Guinness and mushroom and the creamy chicken and broccoli. Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, steak, lamb, savory puddings and the usual English grills round out the menu. For dessert Lady Bradford’s gingerbread sticky pudding, spotted dick, apple blackberry and hazelnut crumble and a whole lot more. I love this restaurant and it is perfectly located for a pre-theater dinner.

These are just a few of my favorites,I have others and I make a real effort to try at least one new restaurant on every visit. With the thousands of restaurants available, I will never complete my research, but I will keep trying.

It’s been a good number of years since we first launched the London escorts agency Bond & Mayfair web site. Originally we weren’t based on the web at all, business has always been booming and all we had to do is rely on adverts in magazines such as What’s On etc…good advertising is partly what we needed to do. Times have changed but in fact for the better in many ways as we are now the most recognised and respected escort agency in the UK.To have a successful London escorts agency you need to put in long hours with a lot of determination and dedication. This is the minimum effort you need to actually stay in business in this industry, a lot of people will try to bring you down and try to make you look small. They think they know everything that there is to know but really and truly they don’t know much at all, these are the ‘Bedroom Boyz’. Looking at the industry from a distance it is getting much better as more and more people are beginning to realise that acquiring cheap service from a so called high-class London escort agency is not always the right choice. Most of the time they get burnt.Bond & Mayfair will at all times strive to provide the best value for you and we constantly keep a perfect blend of old world service at the same time keeping modern demands and comforts as high priority. There are many others just likes us that are trying very hard to keep things nice, clean, friendly and professional but the list is now beginning to grow endlessly and only the best are being remembered.

Things to do in London in the spring – Part 3 http://www.lost-in-uk.com/things-to-do-in-london-in-the-spring-part-3/ http://www.lost-in-uk.com/things-to-do-in-london-in-the-spring-part-3/#comments Tue, 25 Aug 2009 14:26:29 +0000 admin http://www.lost-in-uk.com/things-to-do-in-london-in-the-spring-part-3/ London Eye and getting a view over the whole City, though book early.

Nightlife is varied and the theater and musical offerings in Central London are varied to cater for all types of tastes from Opera to modern musical. There ... ]]> For me, London comes as a second choice to Paris, although it has it’s merits as a place to visit at any time of the year, and Spring is no exception. Getting the balance right between the hustle and bustle of City life, and the calm of the city is essential for a Spring break.

The shops are amazing to visit, and the selection enormous, though do you really want to spend all of that Spring sunshine in shops and amidst crowds of people ? Pick out the best of the bunch and visit Selfidges, take a walk down Oxford Street, but do get an A to Z because these handy little guidebooks can be a lifesaver, in that when the shopping feet are tired, if you haven’t planned your day correctly, you might miss so many areas hidden amidst the hugeness of the City, and that are sometimes nearer than you think.

Trafalgar Square and Nelson’s column are worthy of a visit and these can be combined with the Art Galleries in the same region. Madame Toussauds, the famous waxworks and the Planetarium are worth a visit too, though plan to have something else to see that is local, and use of the A-Z will help you enormously. These are good options for rainy days because the entertainment is indoors.

Transport options in London are diverse, though the public bus service a little confusing for the tourist. The tubes are well laid out and mapped and easy to understand and getting a pass to last you your visit will help you to economize on the price of transport over your stay. Driving is difficult at best and parking expensive, and if you have a car, leaving it on the outskirts is the best option, and taking the tube into Central London easier. Traditionally, the black cab is a reasonable option for those evenings out and the drivers are usually helpful and know their way around well.

Tradition in London is hiding behind every corner, just like in many huge cities. Time your visit to see the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, or for taking a moment of reflection in the splendor of St Paul’s Cathedral. There really is a lot of choice and areas to interest everyone, from the Natural History Museum to those that just want to grab London atmosphere.

A visit to the Tower of London, or alongside the Thames and the Array of historic bridges that cross it, follow the walkways away from the crowds, and grab a cruise down the Thames either during the day or the evening. London really does have everything though no visit would be complete without taking a ride in the London Eye and getting a view over the whole City, though book early.

Nightlife is varied and the theater and musical offerings in Central London are varied to cater for all types of tastes from Opera to modern musical. There are also many cinemas. Tourist Information Offices will help you in that search for evening entertainment, and do have ticket services.

The key to a Spring break in London really is planning because of the diversity of what London has to offer and without planning, so much to be missed.
